On Track for Kokoda

0

Harcourts Mandurah real estate director, Clare Seamer is on a strict training regime that will enable her to tackle the arduous Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Anzacs.

Clare is among a group of up to 40 crazy and committed people on track who are set to endure 10 days in dense jungle in hot, humid conditions at altitudes as high as Mt Kosciuszko, as part of The Harcourts Foundation Kokoda Challenge.

“There will be no bathrooms, no hairdryers, no pubs, no five-star accommodation and we will be sleeping on thin rubber mats,” Clare said.

Clare’s husband and three sons are supportive of Clare’s goal to raise at least $10,000 for the Beyond Blue – Australia’s national depression initiative.

“I have always wanted to be challenged to the max,” she said.

“We will all be helping each other in the hot, humid conditions.

“There is a group training together in Queensland, but I am the only one in the group from WA so I have hired a personal trainer to help me prepare for the walk.

“Mind you, I have paid extra to have someone carry my 30kg bag; I don’t think I could manage that as well.”

The trail takes participants through creeks and rivers and they will stop at night near a steam so they can have a soak at the end of the day – and all their food is prepared for them.

“I am under no illusion as to how tough it will be,” Clare said.

Her challenge does not come cheap – the cost of the fundraising adventure is high, so as well as seeking sponsorship for Beyond Blue, funds are also needed to cover the costs of her journey.
